The Anti-Aging Power of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) For Skin and Scalp Rejuvenation

WHAT IS PRP?

PRP has a long history of being used in orthopedic medicine, dentistry, and reconstructive surgery. Now, its benefits are being applied to other fields of medicine such as dermatology, hair loss, and cosmetic facial rejuvenation. Scientific studies dating back 30 years have documented that PRP grows new collagen when injected into the skin and recent studies show that PRP can soften sun damage and aging skin issues.

PRP IS A TECHNIQUE THAT USES A CLIENT’S OWN BLOOD TO DERIVE OUT THE NATURAL GROWTH FACTORS THAT ARE PRESENT IN THEIR PLATELETS.

THESE GROWTH FACTORS INCLUDE:

  • Platelet-derived growth factor
  • Transforming growth factor beta
  • Fibroblast growth factor
  • Insulin-like growth factor 1
  • Insulin-like growth factor 2
  • Vascular endothelial growth factors epidermal growth factor
  • Interleukin 8
  • Keratinocyte growth factor
  • Connective tissue growth factor

At Carolina Regenerative Health, we provide a variety of hair loss treatment options to our patients. With PRP Therapy, we can help adult men and women manage their ongoing hair loss with limited side effects and no downtime required. PRP treatments can be used effectively on their own or as part of a comprehensive hair care treatment plan.

THE NATURAL GROWTH CYCLE OF HAIR

Hair follicles operate based on a set cycle that determines when and for long they produce hair. The hair growth cycle consists of four stages: the growing phase, the transition phase, the resting phase and the shedding phase. Each stage of the cycle can last for a varying amount of time, but an entire cycle typically takes between two to seven years, with the growth phase lasting the longest. Each hair follicle operates on a different growing schedule, so any hair lost on a daily basis is naturally replaced by incoming hair.

Genetic hair loss, also known as male or female pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia, occurs when the natural growth cycle becomes disrupted and hair no longer grows back after follicles go through the shedding process. While experts are still performing research to determine the exact cause of genetic hair loss, the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) has been highlighted as the main culprit. DHT inhibits hair growth in an unknown manner and causes hair follicles to miniaturize, producing thinner strands of hair until production ceases altogether.

PRP treatments for hair loss works to restore nutrients and growth factors to hair follicles negatively affected by the presence of DHT. By providing a direct source of nutrients, PRP can reactivate and rejuvenate aging follicles that have begun the miniaturization process. While PRP Therapy cannot cure hair loss or stop it completely, it can slow down DHT’s effects and regrow hair to lessen its impact.

OUR PRP PROCEDURE

During your PRP Therapy appointment, a small amount of blood is drawn and used in the procedure. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge to separate the plasma rich in platelets and nutrients from the other blood cells. Once prepared, the PRP is injected into the scalp using a series of coordinated injections that target balding and thinning sections of hair.

Local anesthesia or numbing cream may be used to limit discomfort during treatment, but most patients find PRP Therapy to be comfortable enough on its own. The procedure takes about 30 minutes in total, and patients are free to leave their appointment and resume normal activities immediately afterward.

RECOVERY AND RESULTS

Because PRP is autologous, meaning taken directly from the patient, adverse side effects are avoided. Side effects mainly stem from the injection sites and may include minor swelling and redness in the scalp that typically heals in a few days. Treatments are completed on-site at Carolina Regenerative Health.

Following PRP treatments for hair loss, patients will notice an improvement in the condition of their hair after several weeks. Every patient responds to PRP Therapy differently, and some patients may require a series of multiple treatments before experiencing optimal results. For many patients, PRP Therapy is repeated every few months to produce sustained results.

Whether your condition was caused by a sport, work accident or otherwise, we welcome the chance to serve you.
